When you have a country like Croatia that’s made up of more than a thousand islands scattered along the Adriatic Sea, island-hopping becomes inevitable. But what’s irresistible about it all is that each island embodies its own distinct personality and history. Take Korčula, the second most populous Adriatic island, for instance: It’s home to both archaeological sites and caves and historical downtown architecture, to both mountainous terrain and beaches. It’s also rumored to be Marco Polo’s birth home. So of course Korčula was on first lady Jackie Kennedy’s itinerary on her two week-long vacation (other stops included Skorpios, Greece) with her sister Lee Radziwill in October 1963. And the two radiated elegance in chic sheath dresses and silk head scarves.
