A Rodarte Retrospective is Opening in Washington D.C.

Since sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy founded their label Rodarte in 2005, they’ve enjoyed astronomical success. A hit with Sofia Coppola film heroines, the Fanning sisters, and other big-name stars who aren’t afraid to play with fashion, their label fuses the traditional tropes of French couture with the wearablity and comfort of Kate and Laura’s Californian roots. Rodarte’s been featured in collective fashion exhibitions before, but today, it’s been confirmed as the subject of an upcoming retrospective at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. Slated to open next Fall, it will be Rodarte’s first solo showing in a museum.

The exhibition has yet to be named, designed, or curated, but it’s on tap to conclude the museum’s year-long 30th anniversary celebrations. In an interview with WWD, museum director, Susan Sterling explained why Rodarte was chosen: “They [Kate and Laura Mulleavy] work a lot like artists in the sense that they’re almost artisanal in the way they produce their work; they somewhat go against the grain of having a really huge schedule of shows. They tend to take time with their collections and they live in L.A. and have an interesting relationship with film and the art scene.”

In the same interview, Sterling also revealed that the Mulleavy’s have selected a specialist guest curator for the show. The exact name is under wraps, but it’s confirmed whoever they’ve chosen is a major player in the fashion industry.
