The Biggest Fashion Moments of 2016

This year, fashion house shakeups and shocking runway moments sent ripples through the fashion industry. 2016 saw a number of major designers depart their creative director roles beginning with Hedi Slimane, whose resignation came after the terms of a new contract couldn’t be met by Saint Laurent. Following that, Pierpaolo Piccioli debuted a stellar solo collection at Valentino after Maria Grazia Chiuri exited to takeover Raf Simons’ old post at Dior, and Simons’ himself confirmed that he was upping sticks to live stateside in his new role at Calvin Klein.

It was also the year that further cemented Paris as the fashion capital of the world: Anthony Vaccarello’s first Saint Laurent outing was the most-anticipated show during the city’s September schedule and Rihanna’s Marie Antoinette-themed Fenty collection was the biggest draw in terms of celebrity flare. Elsewhere, Kanye’s Yeezy Season 4 brought the drama and Tommy Hilfiger flew high on the tails of a sold-out collaborative collection with Gigi Hadid. Throughout the industry, designers toyed with see-now, buy-now runways, with American designers like Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger all testing the concept for Fall 2016.

Then there was the darker side of the year that hasn’t seem to let up. In January, news came of David Bowie’s death—and from there, more icons of the fashion and music worlds sadly passed away. Prince died at the age of 57 in April, legendary street style photographer Bill Cunningham in June, and influential singer songwriter Leonard Cohen was the most recent loss, the day before the pant suit frenzy that was the US Presidential Election in November.

It’s been an interesting year for so many reasons, and the surprises keep on coming—but as we hold out two more weeks for what we hope can be a fresh start, here’s a recap of 2016’s biggest moments in fashion news.
