Tommy Hilfiger’s Carnival is Open for Business

Tommy Hilfiger transformed New York’s South Street Seaport into “Tommy Pier” for the designer’s carnival-themed runway show, which isn’t just another one of his elaborate sets. The carnival is actually open to the public today until 9 P.M. Should you head over, you’ll find the same amusement park rides, temporary tattoo booths, and delicious-looking food stands that we would have enjoyed had we arrived sooner. Also available to the public, is his much-anticipated collaboration with model Gigi Hadid, which debuted on the Tommy’s “see now, buy now” runway last night.

At showtime, a predominately Rihanna-based soundtrack nearly moved us out of our seats. “Baby, this is what you came for.” Things were already off to a great start, but after a few looks it was clear that this collection was to be a major triumph for the house of Hilfiger, who saw the value in joining the shoppable runway trend this season and in teaming up with the force that is Gigi Hadid.

What was also made clear is the amount of influence that Gigi and her Insta-famous girl squad have on the house’s new direction. Every single look was a cooly-styled version of Gigi’s off-duty persona. If you’ve been following the most photographed model in the world, her look isn’t consistently the same, but she always nails sporty well as she does sexy; every true supermodel has to be that versatile.

The question is, where does Hadid and her crew draw their influence? Some of it comes from the high low mix of streetwear and designer fashion that’s ever-present today. And some of it likely comes from the vintage that their mother’s saved from the time that were modeling. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, Hilfiger was busy building a fanbase of his own, also dating back to previous decades when hip hop stars like Aaliyah popularized his head-to-toe looks requiring baggy jeans slung low enough to show the Tommy logoed boxer briefs underneath. That nostalgia was resurrected last night to its comparable soundtrack of today. Impressive carnival or not—the new Hilfiger would have won us over. Though sans cotton candy, we left feeling like it’s the start of the best Fashion Week that New York has seen in awhile.

Tommy Pier is open from now until 9 P.M. at Pier 16 at South Street Seaport. Gigi Hadid x Tommy Hilfiger is available now.
