Celebrating Seventies Style in Cannes

Paging John Travolta! We’re headed to Cannes again for Carine Roitfeld’s annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS runway show and auction. On May 19th, she’ll host the event at Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc d’Antibes for the fifth consecutive year.

This year’s show will turn the Cannes red carpet into a very chic theme party with a runway show titled “The Disco Collection,” (hence our urgent page to the king of Saturday Night Fever). Guests will see dresses from more than 30 fashion houses including Gucci, Chanel, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, and Paco Rabanne. Carine called upon each designer to create a custom eveningwear look that is inspired by the center of every ‘70s party: the disco ball. This calls for an appropriate amount of sparkle, so each look will be paired with enough Harry Winston jewelry to light up the runway.

To compliment the decade-specific theme, the collection draws inspiration from select icons who had risen to fame during the disco era. “Bianca Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Hall, Diana Ross and Diane Von Furstenberg—each one has made her own contributions to the glamorous Studio 54 days through music, fashion, or modeling — and for defying what it meant to be a woman during that time,” Carine says.

Not only is the show one of the chicest events during the Cannes Film Festival, but in past years 3.5 million euros had been raised by auctioning off the dresses alone. This year’s sponsor Harry Winston will contribute a special piece to the auction. Guests can also expect a special performance by Katy Perry.

We’ll be reporting live from Cannes with updates from the red carpet and backstage with models like Soo Joo Park, Barbara Palvin, Irina Shayk, and Lara Stone who are confirmed to walk in next Thursday’s show.
