Alber Elbaz Returns to the Spotlight

“Some days I like it, some days I don’t,” said Alber Elbaz of his recent spate of time off following his exit from Lanvin at the end of 2015. The designer was in New York to celebrate the launch of his new fragrance, Superstitious, with French perfumier, Frédéric Malle, and appeared in good spirits throughout the evening’s event which was held at Barney’s on East 61st Street and Madison Avenue. When probed about what he has planned for the rest of the year, Elbaz remained tight-lipped, but conceded that he’s working on a few different things. “The future can take you to different places, and I like surprises,” he teased. “For the time being, I’m just enjoying my old hobbies and spending time with my favorite people.”

At a guess, Malle is one such “favorite” person. The perfumier and Elbaz were set up on a platonic blind date by a mutual friend who thought thought they’d hit it off creatively—and they did. “A few lunches later, here we are,” laughed Malle, before going on to explain in more detail how Superstitious came to be. “We have similar taste levels and like similar sorts of things, but are also very different. My humble mission was to listen to Alber and translate his talent into a perfume.”

Early on the two agreed that they wanted to capture the scent of a woman’s dress, presumably one of Alber’s. “We knew we wanted the perfume to be alluring and elegant, to catch your attention as it walks by, but not to overwhelm you,” Malle explained. To create such an illusion, the he built the base of the fragrance around vetiver, before adding “a lot” of patchouli and amber. “Then I covered the whole thing in very good jasmine from Egypt and a dash of rose to end. It begins with a huge amount of femininity and then grows into something very sensuous,” he said to end. If Superstitious could talk, added Elbaz, it would simply say ‘hello.’

In terms of knowing whether or not the new fragrance is right for you, Malle says it’s easy: “If you love it, wear it. If you don’t, then chose something else.”
