Being the child of a celebrity certainly has its perks, but it’s not the reason Isabella Rossellini’s son scored a modeling contract with Ford Models in New York. Instead, 24-year-old Roberto fell into the profession by accident after he was scouted by a photographer who thought he had the right look for the job. Once on set, his familial ease in front of the camera kicked in and he decided to make modeling his full-time career. Here, the up-and-comer dishes on life with his famous mom and his plans to work his way onto the runway as early as next year:
How were you discovered?
“I was randomly scouted one day by a photographer named Fumi. She found me on the street in Soho and asked me if I would like to model for her. It was a job for L’officiel Hommes Italia and I had a really great time on set. After the shoot wrapped, I spoke to my mom about getting into modeling. She thought it was a great idea, so I decided to try it out.”
What’s your first memory of fashion?
“My first recollection of it is to do with my mom. I remember her doing lots of photo shoots and creating her perfume line called ‘Manifesto.’”
When did you get your big break?
“I would say it was when At Large magazine put me on its cover. It was the first big job I was booked on and it’s been my best career moment so far.”
What was your childhood like?
“My childhood was very interesting and super cool. My mom cultured me and raised me traveling the world, so I was able to learn languages and see things at a young age that really helped me grow as a kid.”
Growing up, were you aware of fame?
“I was definitely aware of fame, but I’ve never had a huge interest in that lifestyle.”
Is your mom supportive of your new career?
“Yes, she’s incredibly supportive!”
What do you hope to achieve as a model?
“I’d love to walk for a few big fashion houses. In particular, Gucci, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, and Prada are dream shows of mine. I’d also love to score a few more covers and just work hard to be as successful a model as possible.”
Who is your role model?
“My mom is my role model. She played both father and mother to me growing up and always did what she could for me. I look up to her more than anyone.”
What is the best advice you’ve been given and who gave it to you?
“My godfathers have always told me to do what makes me happy and to never let myself over-stress. It’s good advice that gives me great peace of mind.”
What do you do to stay in shape for your job?
“General home exercise like sits ups and push ups and eating good.”
What would people be most surprised to know about you?
“I love marine biology. The ocean has fascinated me for many years. I also have a weird passion for Japanese Anime. I love the creative stories, the characters, and the really awesome art in it.”
Which actor would play you in a movie?
“Morgan Freeman. He’s an idol to me in the acting world.”
Who is your celebrity crush?
“Not sure if I have one.”
Favorite place in the world and why?
“Probably Africa. I’ve only visited it twice in my life, but it’s so breathtaking. The animals. The people. The culture. It is really something beautiful.”
What are your hobbies?
“I love going out East to Long Island and hanging out on my farm with my mom and our animals. I also really like playing video games and taking photos. Photography is both my passion and my hobby.”
What projects do you have on the horizon?
“I’m currently working on learning how to cut and sew and trying to take as many photographs of musicians that I love as possible. So far I’ve shot A$AP Mob, Yung Lean, Rich the Kid and Luka Sabbat.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“Hopefully I’ll still be working as a model, but if not, I’ll be traveling the world taking pictures.”
