Elliot George Meeten began modeling when he was 18, balancing his career with university. Since then, the 23-year-old Brit earned his degree, faced the Balmain Paris Hair Couture Spring 2018 campaign, and graced the covers of high-fashion glossies alike. Meeten talked to CR about transitioning into the fashion industry, moving to New York City, and his number one hobby.

Growing up did you know you wanted to become a model?
No, no, no, of course not. I took school pretty seriously. I went to college, then went to university and got my degree. I never really thought I could make a career of it. When I graduated, I thought I’d just give it a try for a year and here I am almost two years later still going.”

What was your degree in?
I studied geography. Ultimately I wanted to be working in green energy, development, renewable energy. It’s a bit different from what I’m doing now, but I think I’d like to do it in the future when I’m a bit older.”

So do you travel a lot for you job?
“Yeah, it’s kind of ironic. When I got a geography degree, everyone thinks we should be really good at reading maps and stuff, but I never really looked at a map once when I was at university. For work, I’ve traveled to places I’ve never even thought of traveling to before. New York I’d never been before I got into modeling. Milan, Paris, Spain, Barcelona, Madrid, Holland. It’s been really good so far.”

What’s your favorite place you’ve traveled to?
I went to L.A. for a geography field trip and I loved it there. I loved the vibe, much more chill. Because I’m from a seaside town in England, it was similar but just with better weather, so I really got along well there. But I think Paris is the ultimate city because of the cuisine, culture, things to do–it’s just beautiful there.”

Are you based in London?
Actually I’ve just decided to be based in New York, so I moved here two weeks ago.”

What’s your favorite thing about New York City?
I think the vibe and the atmosphere. There’s always something going on the city is so busy. It can be quite stressful and sometimes quite lonely even though there are so many people, but there are so many opportunities here.”

Do you have any hobbies?
I absolutely love playing golf, but in New York it’s a bit hard. I think you’ll have to travel a bit, quite far out of the city. I started [playing golf], when I was 12. Got pretty good. And then just obviously working, and university, I didn’t play as much. But I spent the summer in England, and play two or three times a week when I’m home.”
