START
Spending summers as a boy in the seaside town of Normandy, a young Christian Dior would follow his mother around as she planted roses in her meticulous English-style garden, memorizing the names of the flowers from her horticultural catalogs and studying their shapes as if the petals were tiny gowns. Dior was utterly fascinated by the women in his life, and those closest to him held a lasting impression on the couturier’s imagination in creating his most iconic designs, including florals, cinched waists, and a very specific shade of lilac. Dior saw fashion through the lens of the women he admired most, highlighting the ultra-feminine glamour of the leading ladies who wore his creations. CR looks back at some of the women closest to the designer and how they inspired the future of Dior.
