Aside from Egypt itself, the second best place for Karl Lagerfeld to present a collection replete with gold tunics and layered necklaces befitting Cleopatra was the Egyptian Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although Chanel’s annual Metiers d’Art show has traditionally taken place in far-flung destinations, Lagerfeld chose to stage his presentation in New York this year as a tribute to Coco Chanel’s appreciation for the city. The designer reportedly first visited the city in 1931, where she stayed at The Pierre, a mere 20 blocks from the Met.
