Though there’s still quite sometime until Palm Beach season hits its peak (that will happen a bit later in October), it’s never too early for a weekend getaway to the ritzy Florida resort town. But don’t think it’s gauche to pay a visit if you don’t own a place of your own on the island. Society swan C.Z. Guest never owned a home in the prestigious enclave, but that didn’t stop her from becoming the subject of one of Slim Aaron‘s most famous photographs of all time—taken in Palm Beach.
The iconic photo depicts Guest, dressed in a crisp white blouse with shorts to match, accessorized only with a pair of wire shades dangling from her hand—she’s certainly so relaxed that she’s already ditched her shoes. Oh, she’s also with her son, along with two of the family’s dogs. The Guest family are set upon the backdrop of a Grecian-style swimming pool with flawless views of the Atlantic Ocean. As comfortable as they look in the image, they’re actually at Villa Artemis, the home designed by architect F. Burrall Hoffman in 1916 for Frederick and Amy Phipps Guest—C.Z. Guest’s in-laws. The home became the backdrop of many images of Guest, who often posed solo or with one of her beloved pooches.
So really, all it takes for a day of shopping Worth Avenue, lounging poolside or taking in a game of polo in Palm Beach are some understated but glamorous threads—and the warm invitation from some well-appointed friends or family members.
