What to Wear When Eating Your Way Through San Sebastián

START

Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.

Situated on Spain’s northern coast, San Sebastián has it all: breathtaking views of the glittering Bay of Biscay, which is framed by three of the city’s iconic white sandy beaches (La Concha, Ondarreta, and Zurriola), a cobblestoned district called Parte Vieja (or “Old Town”) that fuses centuries-old buildings with modern shops, and decadent local cuisine (Basque-style tapas are called pintxos here) supplied by Michelin-starred locales.

“You could make the argument that there is no better place to eat in Europe than the city of San Sebastián,” the late Anthony Bourdain once said. “There are more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita here than anywhere on Earth, but even the everyday joints are superb. The love of food, the insistence on the very best ingredients, is fundamental to the culture and to life here.”

It’s for all these reasons that the seaside town was named the European Capital of Culture two years ago—but of course, it was a celebrity-favorite destination for decades. In 1959, French actress Juliette Mayniel made an appearance at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and promptly turned her visit into one very chic photo opp. Walk along the four-mile oceanfront promenade, dine at one of the many delectable restaurants, soak up history at the San Telmo museum, and more in the breezy wares we found, below.
