Sophie Theallet Reveals “World Citizens” Campaign

French but New York-based designer Sophie Theallet has always had little regard for the status quo—fashion or otherwise. The designer opted permanently out of the Fashion Week schedule last September and following Donald Trump’s US Presidential win in November, she was one of the first figures in the industry to openly refuse to dress First Lady Melania Trump; Theallet penned an open letter in which she cited Mr. Trump’s xenophobic remarks as the deciding factor behind her decision and implored other designers to follow her in boycotting the wardrobe of FLOTUS.

Today, Sophie’s released a powerful series of photographs for her Spring 2017 campaign—which feel like a followup to that letter and are particularly poignant given Trump’s recent Muslim-targeted travel ban in the United States. The ads are titled ‘World Citizen’ and Theallet tapped a total of 13 women varying in age, race, and religion to embody her all-inclusive message. In the lineup you’ll see actresses Neve Campbell, Gretchen Mol, Rossy de Palma, Drena de Niro, Sarita Choudhury, Adepero Oduye, as well as dancer Blanca Li, musicians Corinne Bailey Rae and Chynna Rogers, and model Adesuwa Aighewi. Other notable appearances include Bob Marley’s granddaughter, Selah Marley, pregnant Eyewitness News co-anchor, Shirleen Allicot, and Theallet’s longtime muse and model, Candice Huffine.

The designer hasn’t released a personal statement alongside the ad imagery, but if a picture speaks a thousand words, her message that Sophie Theallet is a brand that stands for female solidarity is strong times thirteen.
