Kompa, meaning something that is complete, focuses on a holistic approach for a project, in consideration and execution. This very word entitles the collaboration of Fendi and Mabeo, the furniture and accessories brand from Botswana, Africa, for 2021’s Design Miami.
A collection of ten pieces of furniture made up of distinct interrelating methods were born from Fendi’s ask of designer, Peter Mabeo, to conceptualize works that emphasize the craftsmanship of his home country. The origins of this body of work stem from collaboration from the first creative meetings with Kim Jones, Silvia Venturini Fendi and Delfina Delettrez Fendi to the mixing of craftspeople working with different techniques and skills to fully realize the structure and functionality of certain pieces.
Some products in the collection were the work of individual artisans, but come together as part of the whole. Compromises or Disagreements through the process actually shaped their results, creating tangible outcomes through objects that inherently and beautifully reflect these moments. A true form of Mabeo meets Fendi meets the idea of the collaboration perfectly blend into one.
Two works in the collection that were directly inspired by the collaboration with Fendi were the efo Stool, riffing on the Fendi double F motif, fusing two distinct materials, clay and Panga Panga wood and the Maduo Chair, pulling from the O’ Lock piece, jewelry designed by Delfina Delettrez Fendi for the Roman House.
Other pieces include the Chichira Cabinet, a basket woven cabinet with drawers; the Loma Stool; a multi-functional work of that is a side table, a stool, and storage container all in one; the Foro Chair, in both clay and Panga Panga wood; the Gabi-Gabi sculpture, made with hand-beaten metal sheets and with wooden drawers; the Gabinyana Table Lamp, which takes its distinctive shape from the Gabi-Gabi but is significantly smaller and incorporates a lamp; and the Shiya Seat, a wood version of old industrial hot moulding methods.
Mabeo, also, created their own version of Fendi’s Iconic Peekaboo Bag by approaching crafts people of desert environments where plant-based materials are scarce and applying traditional methods of tanning, treating, and stitching. A focus of direct relationship between creator, materials, and the surroundings is produced.
In tangent with the exhibit, the collaboration will release a publication following the journey and process.
