It’s fair to say that the 70s have never gone out of style. There will always be a welcome place in the world of fashion for its effortlessly cool flower child silhouettes. With his debut collection, new Missoni Creative Director Alberto Caliri tapped into this timeless, ethereal aesthetic and produced a collection that seemed to be an apt modern take on the famed era. After assuming the role of creative director within the past year, Caliri presented an incredibly fun and sexy show that simultaneously reinvented classic ’70s styles, incorporated the house’s beloved knitwear, and played off of current trends.

The 39-look collection featured a myriad of different garments that looked both Coachella and Italian Riviera-ready. For example, a sparkly, multi-color knit maxi dress was the perfect blend of glamour and nonchalance. Likewise, a blue knit matching pant and shirt set seemed both luxurious and relaxed at the same time.

The ’70s styles appeared in full effect in multiple looks throughout the show. These included numerous slip-style dresses in vibrant colors and dynamic patterns flowed down the runway, evoking a sense of lightness. For instance, a white maxi dress printed with black flowers hugged the body and featured a large cutout that exposed the right side of the models figure seemed delicate and weightless.

At the same time, several looks appeared that reminded one of the more cosmopolitan fashions of the era. One example saw a pair of wide leg yellow trousers paired with a black knit collared top and knee-length brown leather jacket printed with the house name as a pattern. There were also a few garments that played into current trends and the present fashion landscape. Perhaps the best example of this was a multi-colored beaded, bandana-cut crop top with wide-leg, low-cut silver trousers.

Despite it being his first show for the long-standing Italian fashion house, Caliri found a way to not only use house styles in novel, contemporary ways that reference current trends, but also channeled the universal popularity of the 70s. In doing so, he presented a collection that demonstrates that Missoni is a brand that is relevant to the past, present, and future of fashion.
