This season, Proenza Schooler aptly played on all of our pandemic travel fantasies. Specifically, with their Spring/Summer 2022 collection, head designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough took inspiration from their recent travels to Kauai and presented 38 looks inspired by the island and regaining the freedom to travel after more than a year of COVID-19 restrictions.

The garments themselves ranged from slinky dresses to tailored suits to oversized jackets, with each being free flowing and unrestricted in its movement. A sleeveless, red maxi dress with fringe from the hips down was the perfect combination of sophisticated and fun. One could easily see it being worn both on the streets of New York in the summer and at a beach party in the Caribbean. Likewise, a green oversized rain parka appeared to be simultaneously lightweight and substantial, as it breezed down the runway.

Hernandez and McCollough even adapted traditionally professional or restrictive garments like the suit and trench to fit their overriding theme of tropical sophistication. For instance, a mandarin orange blazer and matching pants communicated a dual sense of professionalism and cool. Similarly, a sleeveless beige trench looked ready to don in both the city and the islands.

Overall, the team at Proenza Schouler was able to produce a collection this season that not only presented a harmonious duality between freedom and restriction, but that also spoke to the present-day. With this series of effortlessly chic looks, they perfectly related to the overwhelming sentiment that many have to travel and see the world again. So, when you’re shopping for your next getaway wardrobe, look no further than this collection.
