Heaven by Marc Jacobs, once again, gives a taste of nostalgia while schooling on the coolest references in pop culture with the FW21 drop. Referential in nature, the designs pull inspiration from the 90’s and the early aughts iconography and silhouette, while embodying the ultra cool kid aesthetic.

Like the previous collections, collaboration fuels the vision. Graphic prints by Nathalie Nguyen of Happy.99, Ancco, Julian Consuegra of Stray Rats, Cynthia Lu of Cactus Plant Flea Market, Elluor Shield, and Chris Cadaver all feature throughout the collection.

The first drop draws from work by Katherine Bernhardt, American painter known for her signature graphic spray paint style. Bernhardt pieces encapsulate Jacob’s desire for Heaven by recontextualizing well known characters and symbols for a new generation by breathing a new life into them.

Imagery taken from her Garfield and ET series everything from bags to shirts. Quilted skirt and coat sets, oversized knitwear, and hoodies reimagines street wear of the 90’s and early 2000’s. The silhouettes compliment the bright colors and freehand graffiti like art style of Bernhardt’s work.

Honoring his longtime friend and muse, a second drop in the collection contains pieces inspired by Sofia Coppola’s 1999 cult film The Virgin Suicides. The timeless themes of teen angst and adolescence lend themselves to Heaven by Marc Jacobs. Iconic stills of Kirsten Dunst, the lead actress, feature on skirts, baby tees, bags and jackets. The dreamy whimsy of these pieces juxtapose the more edgy tone of Bernhardt’s work, creating a variety.

With the release coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Day, the brand has partnered with The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center donating of each The Virgin Suicides baby tee benefiting their organization and the LGBTQIA+ community. The organization aims to create a support system and offer life-saving resources for LGBTQIA+ youth in New York City. Heaven by Marc Jacobs will additionally be holding a special exhibition at their Fairfax brick and mortar in Los Angeles displaying memorabilia from the film.

The campaign images shot by Harley Weir evoke Heaven’s twistedly-cool youth universe starring CR Girl Adut Akech, Iris Law, and Teezo Touchdown. Heaven by Marc Jacobs continues to evoke an affection and desire for the past, while creating for and speaking to a younger audience. Jacobs is cultivating a conversation to inspire and be inspired.
