Maria Grazia Chiuri is reclaiming Christian Dior’s Haute Couture as the house returns for its in-person show after three seasons of digital presentations. This Couture Week, Dior contextualizes its Fall/Winter 2022 Haute Couture collection in the theme of returning to “being present.” Chiuri reinterprets embroidery as it illuminates the senses of sight and touch, beyond ornamental placement, defined through tactility, and demonstrating intricate craftsmanship central to Haute Couture.
The show focuses on the textile, taking viewers on a journey in an assortment of checks, tweeds, and textures in dimensional black and white tones. The book Threads of Life by textile artist and curator Clare Hunter informs the values of weaving and embroidery that are featured in the 75 looks, in innovative warp and weft constructions, as Chiuri appreciates the technique’s abilities to transmit memory, gestures of protection, care, and protest.

The Paris venue forwards the story of opulent textures, where the work Chambre de Soie, “Silk Room,” created by French artist Eva Jospin, wraps the walls. In one to one scale embroidery, the mural pays homage to the Indian-inspired Salle aux Broderies “Embroidery Room” in Rome’s Palazzo Colonna.
Jospin’s creation serves as a magnificent backdrop for the rollout of precious garments constructed in powder blue and nude colors dear to Christian Dior himself, and an additional dress embroidered in enchanting green.
