Unpacking MGK and Megan Fox’s Matching Style

START body

Megan Fox’s relationship with Machine Gun Kelly is the perfect example of good-on-their-own-but-better-together — at least when it comes to style, that is. The pair started dating in the spring of 2020 when they met on the set of their movie Midnight in the Switchgrass, and Megan Fox also starred in Machine Gun Kelly’s music video for Bloody Valentine. Ever since they got together, the pair has served look after look for red carpets, Instagram snapshots, and paparazzi photos and we can’t get enough.

We don’t blame anyone who has fully dived into the hype of their couple style. After all, accessories are great, but what if you could accessorize by walking out hand-in-hand with a second person in a full outfit of their own that ties your final look together? That’s how Megan and MGK have been tackling their own personal wardrobes over the past few months. Gone are the days of dragging your boyfriend to the mall to buy him a pair of properly-fitting jeans with the promise of only making him wear them on date nights because Megan and MGK have declared that when it comes to fashion, two are better than one, and it’s best if matching colors are involved.

Megan Fox’s style, previously comprising mostly of mini dresses and ripped jeans, recently got the full do-over treatment from stylist Maeve Reilly whose other clients include Hailey Bieber, the D’Amelio sisters, The Chainsmokers, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Reilly is known for breathing life into the street-style looks of her clients and her time with Megan Fox has been no different. Fox has made a splash with her total style revamp, taking to the streets decked out in clean, classic tailoring and statement pieces like Mugler mini dresses and Bottega Veneta handbags. The actress hasn’t lost her edgy style, though recently she seems to prefer sharp lines and leathers over band tees.

Machine Gun Kelly continues to be just the right amount of reckless with his personal style, aided by stylist Adam Ballheim who told Women’s Wear Daily that “he’s a really cool guy and he has such a distinctive style himself — he’s brave and he wears everything with ease.It is MGK’s fearlessness that allows him to pull off stacked pearl jewelry, uniquely deconstructed suits, and yes, a painted tongue to match his Balmain look for the 2021 Billboard Music Awards. The BMA’s look that Reilly chose for Megan was a subversive take on the Little Black Dress — sure, it was black and indeed it was a dress, but it was more cutout than dress in signature Mugler fashion with sheer swaths of black fabric clinging to the hips.

This current awards season has also given us Megan Fox in a Barbie pink Mach & Mach jumpsuit and MGK in a white suit with matching pink details (pink striped socks and a pink butterfly on his lapel) at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, along with plenty of paparazzi photos of the sartorially in-sync duo strolling down the street or exiting buildings. These casual snapshots of the couple’s outfits are made worthy of being printed out and stuck to an inspo board simply due to the fact that they’re so strikingly coordinated. MGK and Megan don’t always match, mind you, but their individual fashion choices are disruptive and fearless, polished yet insubordinate, taking classic looks and elevating them through creative, rebellious subversion as the couple did with their LBD and black suit look for the BMA’s.

We can’t ignore the fact that part of the mass appeal of couple style is how the visual, sartorial belonging of a matching outfit lends itself to creating greater exclusivity within a relationship that becomes even more of a status symbol. But MGK and Megan, strange as their love may be (see the blood necklace that MGK wears around his neck below), make the red carpet feel fresh again — no small feat in the age of re-emerging into society after a year of virtual and socially distanced events. Their matching style hits the mark at the intersection of Y2K nostalgia, a la Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in their matching denim-on-denim Canadian tuxedos, and a camera-ready front that is very 2021 and lends itself nicely to a present-day social media frenzy. We want what they have — even if it’s just for the pics.
