Since its first edition in 1964, Pirelli’s prestigious calendar continues to be one of the year’s biggest moments in fashion photography. Early this morning in Paris, the 44th edition was unveiled under the title of “Emotional.” Photographed by Peter Lindbergh, the calendar reveals an entirely new concept. Unlike calendars 1-42, which typically featured professional models or last year’s edition which starred influential women such as Fran Leibovitz, Yoko Ono, and Amy Schumer wearing far less revealing look than your average calendar girl, the 2017 edition brings together an impressive cast of A-list actresses. The full lineup includes Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Robin Wright, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Juliane Moore, Rooney Mara, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, and Zhang Ziyi. A political professor from Moscow State University called Anastasia Ignatoya also appears as a special guest star.

“My aim was to portray women in a different way,” explained Lindbergh in a press release of his casting objective, “and I did it by calling in actresses who’ve played an important role in my life, getting as close as possible to them to take my photos. As an artist, I feel I’m responsible for freeing women from the idea of eternal youth and perfection. The ideal of perfect beauty promoted by society is something that simply can’t be attained.

In a time when women are represented in the media and everywhere else, as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests, a beauty which speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself and your own private sensibility.”

He continued that he chose the title “Emotional” in the hope of creating a calendar that was “more nude than naked.” This calendar is not, he emphasized, centered around “perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion, stripping down to the very soul of the sitters.”

Shot over a period of two months in five locations around the world, the 2017 calendar is made up of a grand total of 40 images. It also marks the third—almost fourth—time that the German photographer has been asked to produce a Pirelli Calendar. His first was two decades ago in 1996, his second in 2002, and he co-produced an edition in collaboration with Patrick Demarchelier in 2014.
