Valentina Sampaio has made history with many firsts. She was the first transgender model to grace the cover of Vogue Paris, as well as Vogue Brasil and Vogue Germany. She then went on to pose for magazines such as Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair.

In August of 2019, Victoria’s Secret made an announcement that would be transformative for their brand, Valentina Sampaio, and the LGBTQ+ community at large: it decided to hire an openly transgender model for the first time in 42 years. Brazilian beauty Valentina Sampaio would be the first transgender woman to join the lingerie giant’s infamous repertoire of models. This decision was critical for the company’s rebranding, featuring inclusion for a new generation of women.

Yesterday Sampaio was able to add a personal first to her resume: attending the Met Gala. Invited to sit at Victoria’s Secret’s table, Valentina Sampaio detailed for CR Fashion Book her experience on Fifth Avenue’s legendary steps.

On her experience at her first Met Gala: As someone who comes from a small fishing village from north eastern Brazil, attending the Met Gala was a dream come true. I am so honored that Vogue, Anna Wintour and Victoria’s Secret invited me to my first Met Gala. It was an experience I’ll be forever grateful to them for. I was definitely nervous leading up to the red carpet, but I had my dog Leo with me during glam to help with the nerves. Once I stepped out of the car, the excitement hit me and I just took it all in.

On the getting ready process: I worked with Victoria’s Secret to help with all my foundational pieces for underneath my look. Since looks for the Met are very intricate, foundational pieces are a staple for the outfits. Armani Beauty did my makeup and stuck to neutrals and earthy tones to not take away from the bold dress. We wanted the hair to be simple and sleek to complement the whole look.

On the people she met: It was so special to be in the presence of all these celebrities that I’ve looked up to my whole life like Rihanna. I was lucky to sit at Victoria’s Secret’s table with amazing people like Megan Rapinoe, Suni Lee, and KiKi Layne.

On her favorite looks from the carpet: J-Lo always kills it on the red carpet. I loved Rosalia’s all-red look. Iman’s look was also showstopping.
