9 of the Best Vegan Skincare Products

START

According to a recent trend report by Google, online searches for vegan beauty products have jumped 83% in the United States within the last year. Top trending search terms include vegan soap, chapstick, face wash, lotion, body wash, and a general umbrella search for vegan skincare.

To be clear, vegan products are defined as those not containing any animal or animal-derived ingredients. This includes, but is not limited to: honey, beeswax, lanolin, collagen, gelatin, and many others like tallow, which is rendered animal fat made from boiling dead carcasses to produce a creamy base for things like skin balms, lip salves, and foundation.

To be 100% vegan in the truest sense, products must also be cruelty-free, meaning that they have not been tested on animals of any kind in a laboratory. It’s essential to note, however, that a cruelty-free label and vegan one are not interchangeable. General claims like all-natural, organic, green, eco, chemical-free, hypoallergenic, and dermatologically tested, have no indication of a product being vegan or even ethically sourced as the majority those terms have no Federal standards governing the use of them.

In the same report by Google, the search engine’s data states that the average American is thirteen times more likely to search for vegan beauty buys than someone in France. Those odds are even higher when pitted against a resident of Japan, where cleansing is the most Googled term and vegan products aren’t reported to rank at all.

The report doesn’t attempt to explain why more people are searching for vegan items, but it doesn’t seem entirely surprising given the increased exposure a vegan diet has received in the mainstream media. No longer maligned to a crunchy granola image, it helps that more and more brands are finding a way to bridge the gap between highly effective luxury products that are nicely packaged and those that are harmless to animals in 360-degree totality. Another added bonus is that many of the top-performing vegan brands value environmental issues highly and hold other toxic, non-animal ingredients at arm’s length too—making it a no-brainer to invest in vegan products whether or not you still embrace eating meat.

With all of the above in mind, we’ve rounded up our top picks that qualify as 100% vegan.
