The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art just announced the theme of next year’s Met Gala. The 2019 exhibition, which will be sponsored by Gucci, is entitled “Camp: Notes on Fashion” but don’t expect to see Rihanna or Gigi Hadid decked out in fleece vests and hiking boots on the first Monday of May.
Instead, Costume Institute’s curator-in-charge Andrew Bolton drew inspiration from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on Camp,” and the exhibition will focus on the meaning of the word “camp” in various aspects–whether that is a political camp, a queer camp, a fashion camp, or, as one Dictionary definition defines it as, “a style or mode of personal or creative expression that is absurdly exaggerated and often fuses elements of high and popular culture.”
“Camp: Notes on Fashion” will open with the annual Met Gala on May 8, which will be co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, and Serena Williams. The exhibition will then be on view for the public at the The Met’s Fifth Avenue Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall from May 9 through September 9.
