Recently seen on the runways of Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Loewe, while referenced time and time again in the collections of Yves Saint Laurent and Ralph Lauren, the safari jacket conjures a picture of a glamorous and otherworldly adventure. Although it’s name has aged poorly; rooted in colonialism, the “safari suit” was first concocted in the 19th century, typically worn by Europeans whilst on African or Indian expeditions. Taking cues and borrowing design elements from England’s Norfolk jacket, the “safari” jacket was reimagined in khaki cotton in order to sustain the heat and humidity. Coveted today, the pocketed and practical garment evokes a chic ease, juxtaposed with a utilitarian aura, fused with a functional sensuality that stands the test of time.
