Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.
Fifty-nine years ago, London-born primatologist Jane Goodall embarked on her longtime study of the Kasakela chimpanzee community in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park. Her observations led to several breakthroughs within the scientific community, and to this day, Goodall remains an advocate of chimpanzees, the environment, and animal-human conservation. Though the biodiversity of Gombe, where Goodall lived full-time for 15 years, is currently under threat due to human encroachment, the small park located in the Kigoma Region is a fascinating destination where visitors can quietly observe various species of monkeys (including Goodall’s famous chimps), as well as leopards, snakes, and more than 200 types of birds.
Naturally, Tanzania’s captivating wildlife, idyllic beaches, and fascinating cultural landscape make the vast East African country a popular site for film settings, from The Snows of Kilimanjaro, the 1952 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s short story of the same name, to Hatari!, the 1962 Howard Hawks-directed adventure rom-com starring John Wayne as a game-catcher and Elsa Martinelli (seen in the photo above) as a photojournalist. It’s also drawn a bevy of celebrities from all over the world, including George and Amal Clooney, Oprah, and Naomi Campbell. Should you find yourself booking a trip to the land of safaris, shop CR’s picks, below, to do so in style.
