Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.
Just after America celebrates its Independence Day, the French celebrate Bastille Day, also known as la Fête nationale or le 14 juillet. Held each year on July 14, the festive holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Storming of Bastille, a key kick-off event during the French Revolution that occurred in 1789, as well as the Fête de la Fédération, a celebration of unity that first happened in France in 1790. In addition to a military parade, which starts at the Champs-Élysées and passes through the Arc de Triumph and the Place de la Concorde, there are often fireworks, firemen’s balls, and glamorous beachside parties. In other words, the whole country is in a blissful celebratory state.
Naturally, France’s most festive fête has drawn numerous A-listers from across the globe—including Marc Jacobs, Diane Kruger, Lou Dillon, and Jane Birkin—and has been depicted in dozens of films throughout history (there’s even a 30s-era film named after the holiday). While Paris—and France in general—is always a good idea, consider visiting during Bastille Day to really get a sense of how the French party. Below, shop CR‘s picks to do so in style.
