VF Corporation is the latest in a litany of fashion companies to commit to sustainably sourced materials. The conglomerate has over two-dozen brands under its umbrella, which include some of the most recognizable in America like Vans, Eastpak, Nautica, Lee, Wrangler, JanSport, and The North Face. The company has committed to stop the use of fur, angora, and leather from endangered species at all the brands it represents.

The company has also negotiated a new policy with the Humane Society of the United States and International Humane Society. It details specific regulations for procuring materials sustainably. Those on their global supply chain will have to comply with ethically sourcing leather, down, and wool. These are the three animal products that its brands use most, and whose procurement makes the biggest environmental impact.

VF has a long history of sustainability initiatives; it was instrumental in the creation of the Leather Working Group, which ensures that tanneries are operating in a sustainable manor. It has also been monitoring its down and wool supply chain for many years, though it has never before enforced such stringent regulations and the company has pioneered banning the use of conflict minerals and tracking the origins of its cotton supply. VF was one of the first to make a restricted substances list to limit its industrial waste.

The agreement with VF is a huge victory for the Humane Society and environmentalism as a whole, but ethically-minded practices like these a still far from the industry norm.
