Convincing Korean-born Sora Choi to be a model was no easy task. “For years everyone kept telling me ‘you should be a model,’ but I would decline every time,” she recalls. Eventually, the head of a leading model agency in Seoul weighed in and persuaded her to book one job on a trial basis. Begrudgingly, she conceded and was surprised to find that she loved the entire experience. “I came back begging them to sign me,” she laughs. She’s since gone on to be photographed by everyone from Mario Sorrenti to Juergen Teller—and this season she walked in 23 shows, including Prada, Céline, and Saint Laurent. Meet Sora:
How did you feel when you first got signed as a model?
“I was really excited. My first booking was so small, but it was amazing. I was so happy. I realized that being a model would change my life.”
What was the first runway show that you walked in?
“My first big show was Louis Vuitton Cruise 2015 in Monaco. I didn’t really feel nervous; I was just excited.”
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
“It’s not really a specific moment, but I love all of the traveling that comes with the job. I’d never been to Europe or America before I was a model. Now I live in New York and I love it. The only thing I find hard about living here is how cold it gets. I do not like the winter!”
What is your most embarrassing model moment?
“During my first trip to New York I had at a fitting for Calvin Klein. While I was there, the casting director kept saying to me ‘Sora, you’re gorgeous,’ but I couldn’t really speak any English at the time so I couldn’t understand him. He kept repeating it again and again and I just stood there feeling confused. I didn’t realize what he meant until months later.”
Favorite designer?
“I like so many, but Louis Vuitton is the big one for me because I love Nicolas Ghesquière.”
What’s your dream job?
“I would love to do anything for Chanel.”
Favorite beauty tip?
“I don’t really have any special tips, but I always use moisturizer and sunscreen on my face. I don’t care which brand, but it has to have SPF 50 in it. I started bleaching my eyebrows about five months ago also.”
How do you stay in shape for your job?
“I don’t like exercising, so I try to focus more on walking everywhere. I also drink a lot of green tea and eat lots of fruits and vegetables.”
What are your hobbies?
“I love to play video games and watch cartoons, particularly Japanese ones.”
What’s next?
“Now that Fashion Week is over I’m focused on improving my English. I’ve been taking lessons and I am getting better, but it’s such a hard language to learn. All of the sounds are so new and different to me.”
