Now Casting: Riley Montana

Some models are famed for their unusual features, others for their extreme proportions, but that’s not why Riley Montana first came to our attention. The 25 year-old Detroit native is a model in the most traditional sense of the word, meaning that she possesses the kind of still, symmetrical beauty that makes you stop and stare. But it’s not all about Riley’s good genetics. Grit, determination, and her willingness to take risks have helped her score every gig she’s booked. What’s more, she’s been making music on the side in hopes of securing a firm piece of the spotlight in the future. So if you don’t know the raven-haired beauty for her signature walk or her recent Marc Jacobs ad campaigns, you’ll get to know her by voice. Meet Riley:

How were you discovered?
“Being the spontaneous and slightly crazy person that I am, I decided to move to Los Angeles with only 5 in my pocket to become a model. Six months after that, Riccado Tisci saw a video of me, tracked me down, and introduced me to the fashion world and a modeling contract.”

What was the first runway show you walked in and what do you remember about it?
“DKNY was my first show. I just remember being super nervous initially and then feeling really confident at the end—although by then it was too late because I’d already been down the runway.“

What is your favorite modeling career moment so far?
“It’s so hard to pick just one, but I’d say meeting Eryka Badu at Givenchy was a huge moment for me. She was funny and super chill. I grew up listening to her music so it was dope to work with her. I know that my mom was watching and freaking out for me.”
Favorite designers?

“Everybody gives something different and that’s the fun part about fashion, so I can’t pick a favorite. I think you can wear whatever the hell you want as long as you wear it with confidence.”

Who are your role models?
“My role models can change every other week, so I don’t have a set role model. I can get inspired by a person and not even see it coming. So many people in the world have different and inspiring stories, goals, and aspirations. I guess I can say anybody that’s on a mission is a role model to me.”

Favorite beauty trick?
“My favorite beauty trick is water. Everybody’s skin is different, but if I go a day without water I look crazy.”

What do you do to stay in shape?
“I’m naturally thin, but I’ve started going to a trainer recently so that I’m not thin and out of shape. I only do exercise that won’t make me thinner!”

What would people be most surprised to know about you?
“That I can sing! People never expect me to have a voice, so I love surprising them with a song.”

What projects do you have on the horizon?
“I’ve been working really hard on my music. I’m more than passionate about it and can’t wait to share it with everyone. I’ve been singing since I was around seven, so it’s great to put energy into what I love.”

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“There is so much that I want to achieve, but I’m trying to go with the flow of the universe. My modeling career is a great platform for other ventures and I hope to use it as a springboard for my music, and maybe one day for an acting career.”
