Now Casting: Camilla Deterre

New York’s latest generation of downtown girls are an inspiring breed of game-changing individuals approaching fashion and beauty on their own terms. Take for example stereotype-breaking model Paloma Elesser—who’s the face of Pat McGrath’s eponymous makeup line—and Manhattan-born, multi-hyphenate talent Camilla Deterre, who’s makeup-free Instagram feed has amassed a loyal following that’s increasing by the day. Twenty-five-year-old Camilla moonlights as a restaurateur for West Village establishment Mimi, designs homewares in her spare time, and has made a name modeling for cult favorite brands like Eckhaus Latta. As a teenager, she interned for photographer Annie Leibovitz and, more recently, she [had] did a stint as a photo assistant for Mario Sorrenti, which gives her a huge edge over other up-and-coming models. Read our quickfire one-on-one with Camilla:

What was your first memory of fashion?

“I interned for Annie Leibovitz when I was a freshman in high school. I was maybe 14 or 15-years old and I was helping her on a book about her life’s work. I spent most of my time running around dropping things on set and I just remember being in complete awe.”

How were you discovered?

“Have I been discovered yet? Will I ever be?”

What was your first runway show?

“My first proper show was Fall 2016 for Eckhaus Latta. It was pretty intense because we had to walk outside through a blizzard from backstage to the dome at MoMA PS1 in Brooklyn. Inside, the dome was dark and in full club zone and the runway was a spiral around the guests. It was super fun though. I love Eckhaus!”

What’s your career highlight so far?

“The moment that I’m having right now.”

Who is your role model?

“David Bowie.”

What is the best advice that you’ve ever been given?

“Always be yourself and only do what you feel good about, but push yourself in doing so. ”

How do you stay in shape for your job?

“I’ve been running a lot lately. I’d like to do the half marathon, but I’m a bit afraid of the cold, so it might have to wait until the springtime. My all-time favourite workout is Modo Yoga–although that’s more to aid my mental shape above anything else.”

Favorite beauty trick?

“Less is more. Wash and moisturize everyday. ”

How would you describe your personal style?

“Classic and boyish.”

What do you like to do when you’re not modeling?

“I do interior design and I’m hoping that’s I’ll be able to make my own furniture and art one day too.”

Favorite place in the world and why?

“Too hard to say… Nature!”

Who is your celebrity crush?

“Alex Olson!”

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

“I wish I could remember because I love the feeling of being embarrassed! Sometimes I impulsively imitate a sound or word someone says out loud like a small child might.. That’s usually funny and embarrassing.”

What would people be most surprised to know about you?

“I don’t have any American cultural or celebrity reference points. Like quotes from movies and hit songs just don’t exist to me.”

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

“Ten! That’s ages away and almost half of my life thus far. I will be 35, so I hope I have a country house where I am able to grow food and build furniture.”

What’s next?

“Being discovered!”
