Virgil Abloh Joins J.W. Anderson as a Special Guest at Pitti Uomo

Pitti Immagine Uomo 92 has announced that Virgil Abloh will join J.W. Anderson in debuting a special guest collection in Florence on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. Thirty-two-year-old Anderson was confirmed last week and said via a press release that he was “honored to have been asked to show at Pitti Uomo.” He added that “Florence’s aesthetic is beautiful, which will lend itself to be the perfect backdrop” to his guest collection.

The addition of Abloh to the line-up is particularly validating for streetwear design, which has had its comeuppance in the past few seasons. Abloh came to prominence as Kanye West’s creative director a few years back and has since made waves in the fashion world, launching his own luxury men’s and women’s label Off-White in Milan in 2013. “It’s with great honor that I will be debuting my work as part of Pitti Immagine Uomo 92. I recognize that this platform is amongst the most important arenas for recording fashion history over the years, and it’s my goal to add a unique chapter to that story,” said Virgil Abloh in a statement.

Both J.W. Anderson and Abloh join the ranks of fellow peers Raf Simons, Gosha Rubchinskiy, and Tim Coppens who has previously presented collections at the market-facing event in Italy, in which retailers, buyers, and editors all come together to view upcoming menswear collections.

“We have been keeping a careful eye on Jonathan Anderson’s career for several seasons,” explained Lapo Cianchi, Pitti’s director of communications and events. “Above all, we are drawn to the creativity and eclecticism he expresses in his collections that are further enhanced by high-quality manufacturing and—in menswear—by undisputable sartorial skill. The way he reinterprets elements from the contemporary art scene and from the youth culture, alternating emotional impact (such as out-of-scale volumes) and transgression that are projected towards anticipating the future leaving little room for nostalgia, is very interesting. And his shows are always surprising, with great communicative strength.”

With a huge celebrity fan base, including the likes of Jay-Z, A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, and Beyoncé, Cianchi cited Abloh’s vision of current culture as the prime reason behind selecting him to show: “In a season that’s mixing the traditional hierarchies among fashion, streetwear and role distinctions, Virgil Abloh has transformed his own lifestyle into a successful brand. He has led Off-White to full stylistic maturity without, however, losing his, sometimes very immediate and impudent, brashness that made his name in the beginning.”

Pitti Uomo 2017 runs from June 13-16 in Florence, Italy.
