Earlier this month Nike launched an ad campaign in Arabic, celebrating the prowess of female athletes in the Middle East and their rising prominence on the global stage. Nike’s campaign was titled What Will They Say About You?, and the short film that accompanied it touched on the stigma often faced by Muslim female athletes in their home countries and abroad.
The need for modest athletic wear came to be recognized at the 2012 Olympics when Saudi athlete Wojdan Shaherkani became the first female to compete in the games from her country after her government devised a suitable hijab for her to wear while competing. Another Saudi, Sarah Attar, gained global fame at the same games when she ran the women’s 800m meters while wearing a hijab. This opened the door for many countries in the Middle East, who are now encouraging women to participate in sports. Saudi Arabia in particular has plans to build facilities for women to work out and play sport later this year.
In this vein, Nike has announced that it will be releasing an athletic hijab. The hijab was designed to ensure modesty while still being comfortable in temperatures up to 55 degrees celsius. The Hijab Pro is constructed out of highly breathable polyester fabric, and is stretchy to adapt to a variety of head shapes. Nike says the hijab has been tested by athletes across the Middle East, and has been a year in the making. We hope that this innovation will open doors for millions of girls around the world.
