When we think of Chanel, we think with our senses: the feeling of pearls on your neck or the feeling of confidence when you put on that little black dress that any woman should have. It’s the musky scent of those bohemian parties somewhere on Place Vandome, where Gabriel invited artists like Picasso or Salvador Dali. The signature scent that we associate the brand with, the iconic N°5 perfume, is celebrating its 100 year anniversary this year and the house of Chanel has released a new episode of Inside CHANEL film to mark the occasion and look back on its history.
The film overviews the history of the iconic perfume, from the time when it was first created to the modern days. At the beginning of the 1920s, when Gabrielle Chanel had already been known as one of the leading couturiers of Paris, she went further in her fashion revolution journey and created her first perfume – one that was meant to match the grand chic in her designs. Revolutionary in its composition, N°5 also became the first perfume imagined by a woman for women. The N°5 inspired iconic image masters like Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, and Ridley Scott.
In modern days, the brand has also chosen actresses like Catherine Deneuve, Carole Bouquet, Nicole Kidman, or Marion Cotillard to become the ambassadors of the legendary scent, representing the N°5 with elegance and femininity that match the spirit of the house.
The perfume has ultimately become one of the symbols of the last century and the grand fashion epoche of the French couturiers. It has been part of the permanent collections in the MoMA, New York, since 1954.
