There’s always been something magical about Chanel.
Any stranger can tell you that. It’s no surprise. Whether it’s the elaborate celebrations every season at the Grand Palais or the iconic classic flap bag millions pine over since near-birth. It’s not an air of exclusivity that lies behind the doors of 31 Rue Cambon, but rather, an elevated sense of romanticism that can transport you anywhere in the world. Fashion has always been an escape from a harsh reality and Chanel has perfected it down to a science.
As we’ve all learned throughout the last year, no pandemic can quite take away Coco’s underlying mystical air.
Rather than looking inwards, Creative Director Virginie Viard looked outwards for Chanel’s latest couture collection. She says she was inspired by the beauty and nature surrounding weddings and familial celebrations.
The setting is reminiscent of chic weddings in the South of France, aiming to go full-steam-ahead with the arrival of the coronavirus vaccine later this year. Every model holds a role seen through their garments: a member of the bridal party, the tomboyish cousin, and the bride, as tradition. Arriving on horseback à la Bianca Jagger at Studio 54, the final look consists of an elaborately constructed and embroidered white dress fit for a queen. This is couture, of course.
The 32-piece collection doesn’t sacrifice it’s new cool, edgy status for heritage detail. Every garment feels in-tune with the maison’s DNA. In between full-bodied tulle skirts and tweed boyish-suits the house is known for there are slim-fitting cardigans and low-rise bottoms, perfect for your whale tail. While the couture was maximalist, makeup by Chanel’s makeup and color designer Lucia Pica was kept to a bare minimum with softly smoked eye looks, glowy contouring, and big bushy brows.
The Spring/Summer 2021 show seems to highlight the intimate moments shared between loved ones. Last summer’s socially-distant outdoor serve as the backdrop for Viard’s vision. Flower crowns, scattered petals, and pastel prints are woven flawlessly throughout the film, a fitting ode to a happier spring that’s to come. Okay, Midsommar!
Models, long-time muses, and friends of the house all gathered at 31 Rue Cambon for a paired black and white film shot by Anton Corbijin with music by Michel Gaubert. The intimate narrative continues to run through the collection past the actual garments Viard constructed, with mother-daughter duo Vanessa Paradis and CR 11 star Lily-Rose Depp making a sweet appearance. No, there weren’t any Kristen Stewart memes to round off the show this time.
