Now Casting: Cam Kerekes

During his reign at Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane became known for his peculiar casting choices; he tends to go for a specific type who defies the categorizations of cute and pretty. The latest to hold that privilege is 17-year old Hungarian model Cam Kerekes, whose career has really taken off after being spotted by the legendary Slimane. She was booked for the designer’s remaining shows at the house and was also asked to walk for Rick Owens, Christopher Kane, and Ann Demeulemeester. Most recently, she was the center of our Spring 2016 fashion editorial photographed by Marco van Rijt. But there’s more to know about Cam, so keep reading:

What was your first memory of fashion?
“Before I became a model, I used to dream of becoming a fashion designer. I remember when I was younger, I used to look through fashion magazines all of the time and just stare at all of the beautiful clothes. I’ve always really loved clothes—especially dresses—and I still do.”

How were you discovered?
“It’s kind of a crazy story. One day I was on Facebook and I got a message notification. I looked at the message and saw that it was the fashion photographer, Vincent Barati. He had randomly seen me while scrolling through Facebook and he liked my look, so he contacted me about becoming a model. Now I have a contract with The Lions and I love it.”

When did you get your first big break?
“My first show ever was Saint Laurent Fall 2015 in Paris. It was the craziest start to a career and really amazing. I love so many designers, but Saint Laurent will always be one of my favorites.”

How do you stay in shape for your job?
“I exercise regularly at the gym and I like to take a lot of exercise classes also. Yoga is my favorite.”

Favorite beauty trick?
“I use Shiseido products for my skin. I’m sure there are other brands which are great, but I just love Shiseido. I use their face wash religiously. As for makeup, I only use M.A.C Cosmetics mascara and, very occasionally, a little bit of blush.”

Is there an article of clothing that you couldn’t live without?
“I have a simple black dress from Zara and it’s my absolute favorite item of clothing. It’s just solid black and not at all fancy, but I love it.”

Who are your role models?
“My parents have always inspired me the most.”

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“That’s tough. I’m only 17, so I haven’t had all that much time to think about the future. I’m taking some classes online so I have something to do outside of fashion, but for now modeling is my focus.”
