Olympic gold medalist Anna Korakaki has been announced as the starting athlete of the 2020 Olympic Games’ torch relay. The ceremonial race began in 1936, and until now has never been started by a female athlete.
The relay traditionally begins with a torch lighting at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece, where a high priestess uses the sun and parabolic mirror to ignite it. The Olympic flame will be relayed around Greece for eight days, finishing with a ceremony at Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium. The torch will then be transferred to the host country of the Games, this year’s destination being Japan, where it will visit all 47 prefectures before reaching Tokyo’s National Stadium to light the Olympic Cauldron during the Games’ opening ceremony on July 24.
Korakaki has been a member of Greece’s Olympic team since 2010, and won both gold and bronze medals at the 2016 Olympics for 25m shooting and 10m shooting at the age of 20.
The Flame Lighting Ceremony will begin in Greece on March 12, 2020.
