Emily Ratajkowski on Her First Fashion Memories

At the time of our first one-on-one with Emily Ratajkowski, she was rapidly becoming known for her role in Robin Thicke’s 2013 “Blurred Lines” music video. It seems like a throwback now, but the song was everywhere, and so was Emrata. Today, her modeling career is doing better than ever, but it hasn’t all been about her ever-present image and sexy photos; she often uses her platform to voice her stance on female sexuality.

Back then, she told us about her first fashion memories and being on the very wet set of our Issue 3 cover story photographed by Bruce Weber. (If you recall, the editorial contains a famous kiss between Emrata and Karlie Kloss.)

WHAT’S YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF FASHION? “Watching my mother get dressed and complimenting her on her “boops”. I was too young to pronounce boots.“

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS? “Balenciaga because of Alexander Wang. Givenchy because of Riccardo Tisci. Spring/summer ‘14 blew me away.”

WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS? “Bianca Jagger and Patti Smith.”

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? “My agent, Natalie Smith, taught me the power of waiting and learning to say ‘no’ to certain projects. It’s so important to value yourself as a model and wait for the best opportunities.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO SHOOT WITH CARINE AND BRUCE? “Shooting CR’s cover with Bruce Weber was incredible. We spent several hours in the water and Bruce was right there with us. He made everyone feel so comfort and beautiful.”

WHAT’S YOUR BEST BEAUTY TRICK? “Using baby powder as a substitute for dry shampoo.”

WHAT DO PEOPLE FIND MOST SURPRISING ABOUT YOU? “People always assume I’m foreign and are surprised to hear my California accent.”

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? “It’s a busy time right now, which I’m so grateful for. I’m currently shooting David Fincher’s movie Gone Girl. This month was the debut of my CR Fashion Book cover, which was an honor to be a part of. And there’s a few fashion/modeling projects in the works that I can’t share just yet, but stay tuned.”

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? “Hopefully, I’ll be doing a lot more of what I’m doing now—working on modeling, fashion, and acting projects that I’m passionate about. Eventually I’d also like to produce projects—photographers, films etc. I think that would be incredibly fulfilling.”
