Thomas Wesley Pentz aka music mogul, Diplo can now add model to his already impressive resume. The Mississippi-born star has been announced as the latest addition to Next Model Management’s talent roster. The musician heads up his own record label, Mad Decent, co-produces music with Major Lazer, and is known for his chart-topping hits with Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, and Madonna. While it might seem like he already has enough on his plate, Diplo told WWD that he’s “always wanted to be a supermodel.”
In the same interview, he added that he sees the career-move as a way to deepen his pre-existing ties with the fashion industry: “With the worlds of fashion, music and wider visual culture growing closer, I want to explore a new world of creativity and am thrilled to sign with Next Management who understand what I represent and where I want to be,” he said. Diplo’s appeared in a fashion campaign before. Back in 2011, Alexander Wang tapped him to appear in a grainy black-and-white photo series for Spring. In more recent times, the musician has struck up a close friendship with Moschino designer, Jeremy Scott.
Next Models founder Faith Kates told WWD that signing Diplo presents a unique opportunity for brands to resonate with a wide variety of consumers. “We have a huge appreciation for those who use their gifts to affect culture in a positive way,” she said. “As fashion is representative of the collision of all pop cultures, we are confident that Diplo‘s insight into culture and prowess in music will resonate with brands.”
