Met Ball Haters All Come Crawling Back

If you ask Lena Dunham, Tina Fey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Amy Shumer, or Demi Lovato, the Met Ball sucks. Tina Fey called it “a parade of jerks,” Demi complained the event was “so fucking awkward.” Despite the Met Ball apparently being akin to water boarding, three of the events biggest haters made their return this year.

Lena Dunham had previously characterized the event as torture, saying last September in an interview with Amy Schumer “You and I were literally sitting across from each other at the Met Ball, and it was like a crazy countdown to when we could escape.” This year Lena struck a different tone posting her red carpet look to Instagram, with the caption “Commes des Garçons has always been for the creature who dares to be different, who needs clothing to be more than a way to telegraph wealth or culturally imposed supersexuality. Now THAT is a theme I can get behind.”

Amy Schumer also made her return this year after saying the event “felt like punishment.” She derided the fakeness of the event, continuing, “It is people doing an impression of having a conversation. I don’t like the farce.” But the longest exiled starlet was Gwyneth Paltrow, who told USA Today in 2013 that, “It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.” She stepped onto this year’s red carpet wearing a Calvin Klein dress strikingly similar to the one she wore to her first Met Ball in 1995, perhaps hinting at a fresh start with the organizers.
