The next subject to be revealed from our Issue 7 story titled “Eccentrics,” is Jillian Mercado. Photographed by Michael Avedon, the story celebrates ten change-makers and trail blazers who embody the power of uncovention. Click here to see the first four subjects we revealed and see below for a few words from our fellow favorite eccentric, Jillian.

“Things are changing, but in a really good way. People are more outspoken about what they want to happen in their lifetime. The Internet has helped with getting those messages across quickly. When you get opinions from so many people who want to see a change, then it’s time to take a moment to listen to that.

Specifically, in the fashion industry, diversity is a really big thing that should’ve happened a long time ago, and now we’re finally seeing things move forward. It’s about cool people who love what they do, but for me, it’s mostly about diversity. Diverse groups of people are slowly making their way into the spotlight, which is the message that Nicola Formichetti wanted to get across when he cast me in his Diesel ad. If you can’t relate to whoever is modeling in the ad, then you can’t relate to the clothing being sold. Until Nicola cast me, I had thought I could never be a model, because I’d never seen anybody who looks like me. It took me a long time to get here, but now, I’m just me.”
