Linda Rodin is a self-proclaimed creature of habit, so we can all consider ourselves lucky that one of those habits eventually led to the invention of her cult-favorite Olio Lusso face oil. Despite her success in the beauty field, Rodin continues to work as a fashion stylist and still doesn’t fancy herself an inventor or an entrepreneur. The fact remains that Olio Lusso and the rest of her self-titled product range is the favorite pick of every beauty expert (and just about every single person who tries it). There’s an incredibly soothing lip balm, a luxe hand lotion, and candles that don’t come housed in any glass, so when lit, they make for a cascade of dripping wax. The latest addition to the roster is Linda’s second fragrance called Bis, inspired by her distinct memory of her mother’s scent. “In my time it was Guerlain, Chanel, and Balenciaga,” Linda recalls. “I don’t remember my mother having a dressing table full of beautiful bottles; I don’t remember any of that, but I do remember her smell. I aimed to capture the essence of what it was. In the end, it turned out exactly as I remembered it.”
When you have the chance to listen to someone like Linda, you want to learn everything about her: what she likes to eat (a simple salad with salmon at 5:00 PM on the dot), what she watches, what she likes to do in her spare time, and which words of wisdom she surely has to impart. Luckily, she was forthcoming enough to lay all of her cards out onto the table, which brings us to the first habit of Linda’s: her favorite television series, House of Cards.
SPACEY CADET “I guess you could say that I came late to the card game, but now I’m addicted to House of Cards. A friend of mine was raving about it, so I sat down to watch it and finished the show in three sittings. I just think it’s so brilliant. Their [Kevin Spacey’s and Robin Wright’s] relationship is the whole show. They make the whole thing happen, in a way. It makes you think that you can’t trust anybody. I’m always picking apart the clothes as I watch something, but there’s really nothing to pick apart here.”
SCHOOLGIRL CRUSH “I’m in love with Jimmy Fallon. He is like the guy in junior high school who never looked at me and never talked to me. And now, I feel like I’m in eleventh grade and he’s flirting with me every night; it’s like I got invited to that cool party. I just feel so cool when I watch him. I love the way he sings and dances, and plays the guitar.”
PAIN KILLER “I love Nurse Jackie too. I’ve always loved the show; it’s so brilliant. The funniest character is Zoe. Everything she says is so funny.”
HOME ALONE “My house is filled with ten billion things. This is probably why I never go out! How could you be lonely with all of these things to look at? I’m always moving things around. I don’t get a sense of loneliness from that. I’m not antisocial to the point where I don’t want to see anybody, I just only want to see them for lunch. Once I’m home for the day, there’s no turning back.”
RAIN CHECK “I am so happy when it rains because I can just sit in my bed and watch something fabulous. I also like when it rains because I don’t like to wear sunblock, though I’ve been using one from Dermalogica; it’s the only one that I can tolerate.”
GRANDMOTHERLY LOVE “One of my grandmothers was a world traveler and a collector. I guess that’s where I got a lot of that from. She went all over the world and just bought stuff. She wasn’t rich, but she was inquisitive, which I am too. She had the most beautiful stuff. My other grandmother had a German accent that was pretty thick. She thought she was a ‘30s movie star, which she wasn’t. She dressed very glamorously and she was very vain. She was very stylish and had big dimples.”
TECH CRUNCH “I typically don’t shop online unless it’s for something that I can’t find in a store. Although, sometimes I do go to Etsy to look for vintage perfume bottles. I like Instagram, but I don’t do Facebook. I don’t follow people, but I like to put up pictures. I have one friend who is really into cooking. His pictures are some of the only ones I want to see—I get hungry just from looking at them!”
THE ROW “To be modeling [for The Row campaign] at my age is funny, but it’s a demographic that people are interested in. I did what they [Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen] wanted and I didn’t know that they weren’t going to retouch anything, but they were wonderful and I really enjoyed doing it. I think that their vision is quite interesting; they’re always doing something different. Their clothes are actually for women who are older and have money. The collection is more conservative and elegant, and I think it was smart on their part to use an older model.”
BLEEDING HEART “I have no regrets. I would have liked to have been in the Peace Corps, but I didn’t devote my life to that. I’m a bleeding heart.”
I HEART NY “New York is a drug. I hate here and I love it here. As I cross the bridge, I think ‘oh god, I love it here.’ Other times, I think ‘why do I live in New York? What am I doing in New York city?’ There are cities in Italy that have it all: good climate and good food, but everybody wants to be here.”
