Elina Waage Mikalsen er en multidisiplinu00e6r kunstner og musiker fra Tromsu00f8, for tiden bosatt i Oslo. Hun arbeider med performance, tekstil, installasjon og tekst, nesten alltid koblet til lyd og lydutu00f8velse. Elina har sin bakgrunn i kunst og film, og ble i 2015 utnevnt til u00c5rets unge kunstner ved den internasjonale urfolksfestivalen Riddu Riu0111u0111u. Siden da har hun vu00e6rt med i en rekke gruppeutstillinger og performance-programmer. Elina sitt kunstneriske arbeid er tett knyttet opp mot hennes norske og samiske tilhu00f8righet. Mu00f8tet mellom det norske og samiske i hennes egen familie blir et bilde pu00e5 maktrelasjonene som hjemsu00f8ker vu00e5rt samfunn som helhet. Dette intime blikket pu00e5 samfunnet blir i hennes arbeider en plattform for u00e5 utforske temaer knyttet til identitet og utenforskap. I lydarbeidet kombinerer hun ofte stemmebruk med feltopptak, elektronikk og selvbygde instrumenter for u00e5 skape lydlige rom som legger seg et sted mellom virkelighet og fantasi. Det er lydens emosjonelle og narrative egenskapene som interesserer henne, og hvordan den kan fungere som en tidsmaskin, som fu00e5r tiden til u00e5 kollapse og setter bu00e5de fremtid og fortid i bevegelse.

Elina Waage Mikalsen is a multidisciplinary artist and musician from Tromsu00f8 in Northern Norway, currently living in Oslo. She works with performance, textiles, installation and text, in connection to sound and sound practice. Elina has her background in art and film, and was awared the title Young Artist of the Year at the international indigenous festival Riddu Riu0111u0111u in 2015. Since then she has participated in a number of group exhibitions and performance programmes. Elina’s artistic work is strongly intertwined with her Norwegian and Sami affiliations. The meeting point between these two cultures in her own family paints a picture of the power relations that haunt the society as a whole. In her work, this intimate view of society becomes a platform to explore themes related to identity and exclusion. In her sound work she often combines her voice with field recordings, electronics and self-built instruments to create sound spaces that sit somewhere between reality and fantasy. It is the emotional and narrative properties of sound that interests her, and how it can function as a time machine which causes time to collapse and sets both future and past in motion.
