Even without a social media platform, Bottega Veneta still manages to go viral.
There’s never a dull headline when it comes to Bottega Veneta. Back in January 2020, the luxury Italian fashion label left their 2.5 million followers stunned when they made the decision to delete all of their social media accounts. Their quiet exit led to mass confusion within the industry and caused a surge of internet sleuths to emerge from their faithful following. While their digital presence turned low profile, their product launches continued to make quite the impression. Their latest “Salon 01” collection of rubber clogs launched earlier this month and a floral ,390 beaded necklace was the topic of much conversation just a mere few days ago.
Now, the house has done it again. Brought to the attention by controversial fashion critic, Diet Prada, Bottega Veneta’s recently dropped a ,000 coiled necklace and matching accessories line. The accessory has been dubbed the “Home Phone Cord” by social media users due to its striking similarity to landline cords. Made of sterling silver and coated in enamel, the 4.7″ necklace comes in lavender, grass, and bianco and features a subtle hook fastening. Social media users have rapidly shown their interest for this nostalgic design, with Twitter and Instagram users eager to put their two cents in.
The matching bracelet comes in a shimmer chrome “Argento Antique” color that slides on like a cuff. The earrings come in more variety. Priced at 0, shoppers have the option of purchasing the enamel sterling silver or 18-karat Gold-plated sterling silver. All featuring pin fastening backs, colors range from grass, lavender, bianco, tapioca, to chili.
All the pieces within this collection match Bottega Veneta’s tradition of logo-less and simplicity driven designs. And it certainly matches the brands’ non digital attitude, being that it resembles the structure of pre-social media telephones. The launch of this jewelry set, while unique in its own right, follows suit of other luxury houses implementing nostalgia in their designs.
Rather than experimenting with wild innovations, many brands have focused on comforting clients with what they already know. In this period of high stresses and unknowns, a sense of familiarity and normalcy of nostalgic influences is paramount. In Bottega Veneta’s case, they’ve be utilzing this strategy for some time now. For their Spring/Summer 2021 Ready-to-wear collection, chunky knits, a popular textile from the ’70s that symbolizes home and crocheted blankets by grandma, were the main attraction. Their recent floral beaded necklace of red, blue, yellow, and green resin beads was also designed with nostalgia in mind.
Reminiscent of the Kiddie Kitsch trend, childhood motifs like beaded necklaces, chunky rings, and cartoon figures have been utilized within high fashion to give customers a joyous reminder of their youth and better times. Luxury fashion houses like Balenciaga, Charlotte Knowles, Louis Vuitton, and Blumarine have all returned to these blasts from the pasts
Balenciaga launched a set of multi-colored toy necklaces and bracelets which took inspiration from the crafty accessories from our childhood.
Charlotte Knowles and Alexandre Arsenault designed a Spring/Summer 2021 collection that combined the sexy styles of ’90s MTV with ’70s psychedelic patterns. Nostalgia worked as the guiding principle for this collection with obvious iconic influences coming from each era.
Louis Vuitton looked to the toy box for their “Puppets All-Over Crew Neck” for their Spring/Summer 2021 Ready-to-wear collection. Exclusively made to order, these plush puppets were a significant factor throughout the season as a nod to playfulness.
Bedazzled belts, low waisted jeans, and animal prints were a few elements from Blumarine’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection which revived the 2000s fashion era. Using idols like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton as references, this brand knew exactly what would peak the audience’s interest.
Phones with cords are all but non-existent today. With smartphones capable of doing everything for us, the functionality of simple pleasures has faded. Bottega Veneta’s cord jewelry reminds us of a time where life was simple and talking on the phone was fun. The unique silhouette definitely brings out repressed memories from talking on our grandma’s landline but as one social media user comments, “but will it reach from the kitchen, through the dining room, and down the hall?”
