Kacey Musgraves Wants to Spend Valentine’s Day on the Couch

“Born in a hurry/Always late/Haven’t been early since ’88” is the opening line of Kacey Musgraves’ exceptional Golden Hour. “Slow Burn” isn’t so much a song about punctuality (or lack thereof) as it is about sitting back and relishing in the journey that is life. It’s the kind of track that, thanks to the delicate strum of the Texas-born singer’s 1957 Gibson J-4 and velvety voice, you might play softly in the background during a quiet night a home on the couch, which is, in fact, Musgraves’ ideal Valentine’s Day activity. Not entirely shocking for someone who spent the bulk of last year touring, and in December, singing beloved Christmas classics with the likes of Leon Bridges, Fred Armisen, and Lana Del Rey. Naturally, her husband, the fellow country musician Ruston Kelly, would be part of the equation. “We really savor our moments together at home because we just don’t get them that much,” Musgraves tells CR. Roses and chocolates, she says, would potentially be involved (she loves them both equally—who doesn’t?). And candles? You betcha.
The latter element is something the raven-haired artist is particularly excited about these days. And for good reason: She’s just launched her very own wick, aptly named Slow Burn, in partnership with trendy, LA-based candle brand Boy Smells. As is the norm with relationships these days, it all started with a DM from Musgraves herself, who’d already been partial to the company’s Kush and Gardener scents. Housed in rose-colored glass, Slow Burn is what Musgraves describes as “the last sips of a Negroni at the bar down the street,” with notes of incense, black pepper, tonka bean, and smoked papyrus.
“I’ve never thought of songs in terms of smells,” she tells CR, “so this was a challenge for me because I had to think of how ‘Slow Burn’ would translate into something you’d close your eyes and inhale. It’s kind of about finding your little zen moment in this crazy fucking world and enjoying getting to whatever finish line you’re focused on.”
“Slow Burn,” both the song and the candle, might be the antidote to speed, but Musgraves has no room for creative stagnation. (Consider her recent work with Tom’s One Hour Photo.) “While I’m off the road and in search of new memories and inspiration, it’s nice to tickle my brain with things I wouldn’t normally be doing,” she says. “I never thought it would be in the form of scent, but here we are.”
