Penélope Cruz brought timeless glamour to the 2020 Oscars red carpet in a black Chanel halter gown accented with a strand of pearls at the waist and camellia flower at the neckline. Along with these classic motifs from the French maison, the entire ensemble was inspired by the Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1995 collection and made custom for Cruz.
The actress–who will be presenting the award for Best Foreign Movie and starred in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, which is nominated in the same category–is a Chanel ambassador and has created many memorable red carpet moments in fashion from the house. This year’s Academy Awards look isn’t the first time she’s raided Chanel’s archives either. In 2009, Cruz was outfitted in a whole wardrobe of archival Chanel for her role in the film Broken Embraces, which was also written and directed by Almodóvar. The pair have worked on six films together, and much like she is a modern muse to Chanel, Cruz also serves as a muse to the director.
Cruz wasn’t the only one in archival Chanel couture on the Oscars red carpet tonight. Margot Robbie, also a Chanel ambassador and nominated for her work in Bombshell, wore a midnight blue off-the-shoulder gown from the maison’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1994 collection.
