Texas-native Brandon Maxwell has made reimagined American classics–think denim, crisp button downs, tailored separates–a part of his brand’s DNA. While his fashion has been met with much fanfare in recent seasons it was perhaps loudest tonight, at his Fall/Winter 2020 show, where cheerleaders and stars of Cheer, Gabi Butler and Lexi Brumback, clapped and hollered from the front row. Both Navarro College cheerleaders have become fan-favorites of the Netflix show, which follows their Texas-based college team as they prepare for the annual cheer competition.
During the finale of Maxwell’s runway, Butler and Brumback gave their seal of approval with exclamations of “baddie!” “beautiful!” and “you’re a 10!”
Maxwell is known for incorporating the all-American spirit into his runway shows–last September’s gathering was tailgate-themed–and this season was no different. In addition to nodding to the country’s current captivation with Cheer, the designer’s dressed-up collection made its way down a runway backed by taxidermy bears at the Museum of Natural History, where Shake Shack burgers were served.
Hunting and hamburgers aside, Maxwell continues to honor his Texan roots while also celebrating the strong women that bring his fashion to life–on the runway, behind the scenes, and from the audience. Along with Butler and Brumback’s inspiring journey, other influential figures in the front row included journalist and activist Noor Tagouri and model and Project Runway castmate Karlie Kloss.
