Moschino Takes on Vegas Showgirl Culture

On Thursday night in Los Angeles, designer Jeremy Scott had its L.A. front row rockin’ and rollin’ in their seats for the Moschino Resort 2018 show. At the center of the runway, a jumble of vintage neon signs lit up as the voice of Elvis crooned “Viva Las Vegas,” and out walked the Insta-A-list (Hailey Baldwin, Slick Woods, Jordan Barrett, Miranda Kerr), sporting Jeremy Scott’s latest designs for Moschino.

“It was fantastic, it was so Vegas,” said Ashley Graham, catching up with us after the show. “Jeremy always brings something so fun and so interesting. Everyone in the front row was singing and dancing — that’s true Jeremy Scott, that’s true Moschino. I’m so happy to be here.”

Back to the clothes. Not to sound too Stefon, but the collection had everything: patchwork denim, ruffles, sequins, glitter, flame decals, Betty Boop, Spongebob, rhinestones, leather, lace, fringe — seemingly every possible accoutrement short of feathers. Until, of course, the yellow feather boa appeared, followed soon after by showgirls in full-feathered headdress regalia. But the collection was more than a sum of its parts.

One got the sense that we were witnessing Vegas’s dreamers — its quintessentially American dreamers — on their way to work, to the pool, hitchhiking to Vegas, or coming off a night on the kick line into new daylight.

With modernized poodle skirts (sheer and sans foof, sporting the outline of a nude woman instead of a poodle), Moschino took a hearty swig from good old American nostalgia, sure — but a nude woman on a skirt wouldn’t have passed muster in the generally more wholesome (and rigid) society of the 1950s. The sheer prairie dresses of Moschino’s resort collection wouldn’t have been accepted then either. In 2017, it’s a different story ·(at least for over half of the country). Our government may not reflect it, but we’re more openminded, more body-positive, more liberated than we were 60-something years ago. Great then maybe, great now, and better for our progressive, onward, evolving nature. Plus, in 2017 we have Moschino’s gold glitter cowboy-gogo boots.

One qualm? A lack of varying body types represented on the Moschino runway. “I’m representing for the curvy girls,” said Graham, who attended the show as a guest, “And maybe next season he’ll have some curvy girls in the show!”
