Gigi Goes Back to Cali

Weed leaf-motif t-shirts and “VENICE” emblazoned booty short aside, the wares for sale any given day on the Venice Beach boardwalk tend not to scream Fashion. This Wednesday evening, however, Venice found itself undergoing a style upgrade when Tommy Hilfiger touched down in LA (in an Air Tommy plane full of models) and set up an amusement park on the boardwalk — rides, food trucks, lollipop carts, fire dancers, runway, concert stage, and all.

When it’s too cold to only throw on cut-off shorts atop one’s one-piece, it’s the Cali way to simply reach for a sweater. This preternatural ease of wear, endemic to LA girls, was achieved via styling on the Tommy Hilfiger runway with its collection co-designed for a second time by California’s own sun kissed supermodel (and CR cover girl) Gigi Hadid. Her designs were purchasable in booths on the grounds immediately post-show (and online for those not in attendance).

In the mid-‘90s (coincidentally around when Gigi was born) Tommy Hilfiger was Everything. Aaliyah appeared in Tommy’s 1996 campaign; Tommy sponsored Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time” tour; your local crush was definitely sporting Tommy. In crop tops, denim, and oversized long-sleeve polos (see: Joan Smalls’ look for how to wear this), the spring 2017 collection made a gentle nod to its heyday. Sweaters and varsity jackets over swimwear, prairie-print patchwork, western-style buckles, palm tree patches and maxi dresses were clear signs a California girl had been here. And in the way that everything old (and especially everything ‘90s) is new again, and for all its nostalgia, with its millennial twist (there was at least one choker present), the collection was ultimately current. With its primary colors and star spangled metallics, it was patriotic, too.

After the show (which opened with a mash up of Biggie’s “Going Back to Cali,” and Tupac’s “California Love,”) Fergie took to the concert stage for a full concert. This level of spectacle is nothing new to Tommy Hilfiger, who popped up at the South Street Seaport in New York for its previous collaboration with Hadid. The geography, however, is new. With Tommy Hilfiger joining houses like Moschino and Tom Ford by showing in Los Angeles, it’s time to ask seriously whether Los Angeles is poised to soon take on a larger role in the fashion industry. Time will tell — but for now it’s fair to note that three’s a trend.
