COACH 1941 Pre-Fall 2017

Last night at Pier 94 in New York, Coach’s Pre-Fall 2017 runway looked more like suburban parking lot—which is where a lot of American teenagers spend their youth. It’s this part of our country’s culture that the brand’s creative director Stuart Vevers has been tapping into ever since he stepped into the role. His latest collection builds on that very aesthetic: what was the suburban/rural youth wearing in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Menswear Fall 2017 was woven into the Women’s Pre-Fall collection, which made sense given the show’s overall mood (you weren’t meeting up in a parking lot late at night to hang out with just your girlfriends). Sweatshirts with NASA written across them harks back to the ’80s space obsession, which has been back in a big this year. The star pieces of both the menswear and women’s collections is the outerwear—though a bit heavy for a June delivery, each felt like a timeless piece you could hang onto for decades.

Towards the end of the show, a choir of youthful voices sang Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ rendition of “New York State of Mind.” It summed up that aspirational feeling of what was going to happen to your life once you moved beyond that local parking lot.

The finale gave way to the biggest party New York has seen all season, disco ball and all.
