WWD has confirmed that Dries Van Noten has given the go ahead on a new documentary, titled “Dries.” Directed by documentary filmmaker Reiner Holzemer, the film will be the first full length motion picture to offer an unprecedented glimpse into the notoriously private Belgian designer’s personal and professional life.
Recorded over the course of a year, the film will chart how Dries first cracked the fashion industry 25 years ago and follow his creative process as he dreams up four ready-to-wear collections under his eponymous label for Spring and Fall. Commentary from him will also narrate exclusive footage of his runway shows in Paris, work inside of his atelier, and a tour of his whimsically lavish home in Belgium. Holzemer also tapped seminal industry figures like Iris Apfel, Suzy Menkes, and Pamela Golbin to talk about Van Noten’s approach to design in the context of fashion history.
In an interview with WWD, the director said that it took him a “a very long time to convince Dries to share his passions, his creative and intimate world in front of a camera,” but that he felt that the end result offers “a very personal insight into his life and career.”
UK-based film distribution company Dogwoof Pictures has obtained the rights to the film, but the release date has yet to be confirmed.
